Ask the expert: Karla Arncliffe-Smith

This week at Great Lengths, we caught up with Karla Arncliffe-Smith, expert stylist and extensionist at Russell Eaton, Leeds, to find out more about how she uses Great Lengths hair extensions for different hair types…

Tell us about you and your experience in the industry

I’ve been a stylist for 21 years now and I’ve been applying hair extensions for even longer. I began my career working with individual plaits for Afro Caribbean hair and progressed to applying pre-bonded hair extensions to all hair types, which is when I was introduced to Great Lengths. I now work at Russell Eaton Leeds, a family-run business that opened in Barnsley 35 years ago and since expanded to Leeds. Both salons have a terrific, diverse team and a fantastic atmosphere. We’re a close-knit group that pride ourselves on creating artistic work across all areas of the industry.

What made you get into working with pre-bonded hair extensions?

I started training in pre-bonded hair extensions nearly three years ago to expand my skills as a stylist. Now, I love the creativity and diversity that comes with applying and styling hair extensions, and of course it’s hugely satisfying seeing a before and after transformation. I enjoy working with all hair types and it’s brilliant that Great Lengths pre-bonded hair extensions can be used for Afro Caribbean hair, as that’s where it all began for me!

Why do you think so many people are now choosing hair extensions to enhance their hair?

There are so many reasons why people choose hair extensions. Great Lengths is great for adding length, volume or colour and the brand also offers a fantastic men-hancements service, so there really is something for everyone. I think clients love the instant results and how they’re able to achieve a hairstyle they would have only dreamed of before.

For those readers who are yet to try Great Lengths but have always wanted to make more of their hair, what would your advice be?

For me, Great Lengths are the best in the business, so my advice would be to find a Great Lengths specialist and book a free consultation. It’s important to discuss your expectations and any worries you may have before you begin.

People often ask me if hair extensions will ruin their hair, but with Great Lengths you can expect a quality service and product, includingmaintenance checks with your stylist to ensure your hair and hair extensions are in tip top condition.

What do you think the next trend in hair extensions will be?

I’d really like to see experts in the industry thinking outside the box in regards to male hair enhancements and for the practice of hair extensions to become much more understood in general, which is something Great Lengths is pioneering.

What has been your favourite Great Lengths transformation?

One of my favourite transformations was a client who was diagnosed with Lupus. She had lost more than 60% of her hair due to this and the stressed it caused her. She first came to the salon to visit the Trichologist, Rob and we later recommended she try Great Lengths hair extensions. The enhancement has enabled her to continue with her life with restored confidence whilst her natural hair re-grows to its normal length and thickness.
